In July 2022, Work with York, Work with Schools and Work with Yorkshire joined The Island’s Business Hub. They are local recruiters who help all kinds of people find the right opportunities to match their skill set and experience. Being wholly owned by City of York Council, they also reinvest a share of their profits back into the local community - so being ‘community focused’ is an integral part of their company values.
Work with York, Work with Schools and Work with Yorkshire are long-term supporters of The Island and are keen to share their expertise to help young people access employment.
Below, they have offered some handy tips for CV writing, to help create the best first impression with employers.
1. Don’t use the header ‘CV’ or ‘Curriculum Vitae’. Instead, use your name as the header, with your email and phone number in smaller text underneath.
2. Your CV should ideally be no longer than one A4 page. If you have lots of relevant experience, you can stretch this to two pages maximum.
3. To start, add two/three lines about you and what sort of work you’re looking for, but ensure this matches the job you’re applying for.
4. List your work/voluntary experience. Start with the most recent first and include key details in the following order:
5. List your education. Again, remember to start with the most recent and include information in the order shown:
6. List any other skills. For example, are there specific IT programs you can use? Do you have a driving license? Or do you have other specific training/qualifications/awards/interests?
7. References. Here, you should provide the names, job titles, company names and email addresses of two people who are willing to write references for you (but make sure you’ve got permission from these people before you use their details). Or, instead, you can just write “referee details available on request”.
8. Remember to spell check AND read it through. Then ask someone else to read it through, make any corrections then spell check it again. Save it as (YourName/CV/Month/Year).
The recruiters have also provided a downloadable example of a CV, which they hope you will find useful.
