Here at The Island, we are incredibly proud of the amazing team that we have. Today we'd like to introduce you to our Manager of Mentoring Services, Emma who has worked and volunteered at The Island for over a decade.
I am the Manager of Mentoring Services and my roles is to oversee and manage the operational team, provide structures support and guidance for the team and oversee the service delivery at The Island.
I wished to pursue a career in working with young people as I was passionate about helping others and sought guidance and support. As a teenager myself, I was unsure what my future path would be, but knew I wanted to work in a sector that helped others. I choose to do this through the charity sector as I could see there was a need for additional support with vulnerable children and young people in York.
The Island inspired me because of its ethos. It was and still is person-centred and individually focused which I love. Whilst understandably we have guidance and structures we also have a whole load of flexibility to work with children and individuals and I feel that is essential to ensuring they get the best quality of support. The Island has a real family feel within the team and wider service and it continues to be inspiring to come to work. It allows for you to embrace your passions and encourage your growth and development.
My proudest achievement at The Island is that no matter what legislation change or new policies come into place we all adapt and work as a collective to further strengthen The Island's services.
'Young people first' they are the heart and should of what we do and keeping the importance of the relationship investment alive means that with individuals we can help them to achieve great things. I am also very proud The Island inspired me to go back to University and complete my BA Hons in Youth Work.
Mentoring is very important for young people, they say it takes a 'team to raise a child' and mentoring forms part of that team. As mentoring is a very flexible approach and caters to the needs of the young person individually, building confidence, resilience, self esteem and positive wellbeing. It also enable young people to work towards their individual goals and aspirations in a world where they are presented with so many multiple complex needs.
I think one of the most important techniques is Consistency - it is crucially important that there is a sense of security within there support and being inconsistent can hinder their journey. This teamed alongside investing in the person as individual can help to achieve real change and growth for the young person.
