We hear from our volunteer mentors all the
time how rewarding it is mentoring a young person in need. The beauty of
mentoring is that it can be done anywhere across York and is flexible around
your own needs and commitments.
Take a look below of why husband and wife, Julian and Linda decided to mentor children and young people together.
My husband and I started
mentoring together over three years ago and at the time, it was myself who was the driving force, and my
husband agreed, albeit it reluctantly as he was concerned about the
level of commitment it would entail. Over the years, we've done things
together and also on our own with our mentee which has been really
beneficial at times when things have been particularly busy for either
one of us. As parents ourselves, we were,
at times, guilty of allowing life and work to get in the way of
focused one to one time with our own children as
they grew up, and so it's heartfelt
for us that through the role of mentoring, we now appreciate all the more, the benefits of focused time within this one
to one mentoring relationship.
I
think, for myself seeing how at times Thomas has responded to me as a female figure when
he's needed to talk on a more personal level, and then how he's visibly grown in stature when receiving
focused attention from Julian
as a male mentor has been quite an eye opener, and I've come to
the realisation that by
mentoring as a couple, we've been able to respond and provide the
emotional connection Thomas has needed at a particular
time. Many children and young people lack a father figure in their
lives, and I think that being able to mentor as a couple can be a more comfortable
role for a man to play. I know that Julian would never have chosen to
mentor on his own, and that this relationship has pushed him at times
out of his comfort zone, but because we've been walking this out as a
couple, he's responded to that in a positive way.
Would
I recommend mentoring as a couple? Absolutely! I can honestly say, both Julian
and myself have benefited
greatly from this mentoring relationship, it's challenged us, it's
pushed us out of our comfort zones, we've laughed throughout, we've
bickered about plans for the activities, but throughout it all, we've
really seen first-hand, how Thomas has enjoyed spending time with us,
and we too have gained as much from this role as we've given him.
