We're currently performing a volunteer mentor drive here at The Island York. Supporting vulnerable York children by providing them with a range of mentoring services, the mentors work with the service-users to help raise their mental, emotional and social wellbeing. We need more volunteers to come forward to help us so that we can reduce our waiting list numbers.
We currently have over 140 isolated children on our waiting list, who need to access our services. Providing one-to-one mentoring, school-based mentoring and group work, our mentors can decide which route they would like to take in order to help the next generation.
One-to-One Mentoring is a 12-month programme in which a mentor works with their mentee to help them overcome challenges within lives. This is an oversubscribed scheme and we need more mentors who will be able to commit to the one-year programme. By committing to the programme for one-year, you'll be able to offer your mentee with the regular support that they so desperately need. Days and times can be negotiated of when to meet with your mentee.
We offer a range of group and school-based mentoring schemes which offers great flexibility to those who are unable to commit to a 12-month programme. We do, however, recommend that you commit to either project for at least six months. This is to ensure that you and the children make the most of the experience as part of work which takes place. You can volunteer once a week or even once a month which means that this is a perfect volunteer role for those who work shifts or lead busy lives.
Our next training sessions will take place at our office on Priory Street in early 2019. Once you have completed the course you will be awarded with an accredited training certificate, which is ideal for those looking to build a career within children's services.
If you would like to become a Mentor at The Island, then
please click here to download an application form and then either email it to us or pop it into the post.
If you are unable to commit to mentoring but would like to help The Island, then we'll really appreciate any fundraising event which you can host on our behalf. As a small local charity, we receive little funding and rely heavily on grants and business and public donations in order to keep our mentoring services going. Please email us if you can help, alternatively you can join our Friends of The Island Facebook Group.
If you have any questions at all then please do not hesitate to contact us on01904 628449.
