The 1st - 7th June 2021 is Volunteers Week - a week in which the UK celebrates volunteers and says thank you to them for the incredible contribution that they make. The Island could not exist without the work of our fantastic team of volunteers.
Earlier last month we had the pleasure of speaking to one of our volunteers - Gilly Dickons. Gilly is a volunteer who helps to collect the food bank donations from Sainsbury’s at Monks Cross, and package them up into hampers for local families in need.
The Island began providing food hampers to some of York’s most vulnerable families at the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis last year. On average, 40 hampers have been delivered each week, although this number has fluctuated throughout the year depending on when children have been back in education, parents and carers have returned to work, etc. At present, 8-14 hampers are delivered every fortnight. During school holidays bulk drop offs also take place, with around 40-50 families receiving a food hamper delivery.
Gilly Dickons is a business owner who began volunteering for The Island during the first lockdown. Gilly explains: “I heard that The Island were taking the hampers out and that they had the food collection at Sainsbury’s and that it was ‘exploding’. Normally I would always be at work, but because I was working from home and not on call so much, I had more time. I thought that volunteering was something hands-on and proactive that I could do to help”.
Gilly continues: “I volunteer on a Friday. There’s a small team of 6 of us, and we do about 2 - 2.5 hours a week each. I work with people of all ages - up to 80 years old. We go to Sainsbury’s, we do the collection, we come back. We do all the shelf sorting, and then make up the hampers each week so that they’re ready to go. Then we help load up the van with the hampers”.
When asked what she most enjoys about volunteering, Gilly replied: “There’s a few of us that volunteer together, and I really enjoy the interaction, it just feels really productive. Doing the food collections and the sorting, it’s really ‘on the go’. It’s not sitting at a desk, it’s a complete contrast to what I do all the time”.
Gilly remarks that “the generosity of Sainsbury’s customers has been amazing. The number of donations that The Island food bank receives has been phenomenal. The staff at Sainsbury’s have been absolutely fantastic too”. The Island is always on the lookout for more volunteers and Gilly believes that being a food hamper volunteer “would be ideal for someone who has time on their hands, who also wants that social interaction. Why wouldn't you do it if you have time? It’s great to be volunteering for other people and making a difference, but you are also doing something good for you too”.
Here is just a selection of the feedback that The Island has received from local families who have received a food hamper from The Island:
“Thank you for all your amazing help and support you have given us. Thank you for all your continued support and help. We really would not have managed with out you and all your help”
“A massive thank you to all the team at The Island. Myself and A are extremely grateful for everything you have done for us over the last year. Many thanks for the kind things you have sent”.
“I just wanted to send a note to say thank you for the hampers. Me and C work together on using the items to make a meal planner for the week. It gets us doing something together and is teaching him vital life skills”.
Emma Thompson, Manager at The Island concludes that she is “incredibly proud of all the volunteers at The Island and the fantastic work that they do. We have had several volunteers who have now had to move on from the hampers, and we would love to recruit some more volunteers”.
