Two weeks ago, The Island waved goodbye to Priory Street as they moved to Beverley House, which is located just off Shipton Road in Clifton, York, North Yorkshire.
A spacious building with a generously sized garden to the back of the property, the move to Beverley House has allowed The Island to offer more meaningful and bespoke mentoring experiences. This includes having set rooms for different types of mentoring sessions, art therapy activities and tuition to enhance vulnerable children and young people’s quality of life.
During the height of the pandemic, experts discovered that tens of thousands more UK children had sought support for their mental health, which has resulted in a greater need for youth services. The Island has seen a sharp increase in children and young people being referred to their mentoring provisions due to poor mental wellbeing. Despite, not being a mental health charity, The Island’s mentoring services have proven to enhance the mental, emotional and social wellbeing of the next generation.
Manager of Mentoring Services, Emma Thompson says “The building has transformed the way we work with people between the ages of 8 and 18 and we’re looking to double the number of children and young people that can support this year. We do, however, need more volunteer mentors to come forward to support our one-to-one and group-based mentoring programmes so that we can provide children and young people with the help they need, sooner rather than later.”

Aside from the additional space, The Island is also on the lookout for additional equipment. Emma continues “We also offer a foodbank service to The Island families who due to no fault of their own are struggling to get by. We urgently need more storage racking supplies to store food on, IT equipment for our art therapy and tuition sessions like printers and computers as well as foldable chairs which we can use outside in the large garden for group activities. If anyone can help us, then please get in touch.”
The Island has moved into Beverley House with Our Father’s Heart which offers financial support to children and young people in Uganda to access education and medical provision and Aceactive which offers fun and interactive activities for children.
Emma ends “We’re really excited about The Island’s future in further supporting children and young people living in York. Beverley House has offered us a great moment of growth.”
