We're delighted to announce that we have become the first charity in the North of England to win a prestigious European Mentoring Award.
The award is from the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC), an international coaching, mentoring and supervision association established in 1992; with membership across more than 70 countries world-wide.
We are one of only four European recipients of its Global Mentoring Award for work in 2019.
Our charity supports some of the most disadvantaged, vulnerable, and isolated children and young people to help them to take positive steps forward. Most of the young people at The Island live chaotic lives, witnessing domestic violence, abuse, substance misuse, and growing up in poverty and neglect. Our volunteer mentors provide 'normality and stability', helping build confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.
The Island CEO, Nigel Poulton, said: “For our mentoring programme to receive such affirmation as an award winner is both an honour and great privilege. It is also recognition of the invaluable contribution of all our past and current volunteer mentors and young people. Our current statistics show that our mentees get more positive thoughts and feelings during the mentoring process and we want to ensure that opportunities they felt were unattainable before mentoring become attainable for them during and after mentoring.”
Nigel will receive the Mentoring Award on behalf of The Island at EMCC’s conference in Paris in June.
