Parents would rather
have primary schools rated on children’s happiness than test results, a new
report says.
The results of the poll were released a day after Ofsted revealed a drop in the number of York primaries rated ‘good or ‘outstanding’.
The ratings of city primaries are still better than the national average, the Office of Education figures showed.
But the majority of 2,000 parents in England surveyed for the other research said happiness should be used instead of exam results as a measure of a school’s performance.
And nearly three-quarters said the way a school felt on a visit would influence the school choice for their child – with only 25 per cent saying they were influenced by good test results.
Currently, pupils in England sit national curriculum tests (known as SATs) in maths and English in the final year of primary school. These results are published and often used in holding primaries to account.
In addition, children take a phonics check in Year 1, and a times table check in Year 4.
The research was commissioned by More Than A Score, which is campaigning for changes to primary school testing.
They said: “We need to ensure that our education system is one that focuses on developing skills in our young people and cultivates a love of learning for life, not simply on cramming them with facts.”
But a Department for Education spokesman said: “Key stage 2 tests have been central to raising standards, helping to ensure children leave primary school with a secure grasp of the fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics.”
“As part of a broad and balanced curriculum this helps lay the foundations for success at secondary school and beyond.”
Here at The Island, we offer a school-based mentoring programme which has been designed to enhance pupils' confidence, self-esteem and more importantly, happiness. We have found if children and young people have positive thoughts and feelings about themselves then this leads to them being more proactive at school.
Our latest school-based mentoring report shows that in just 20 x 2 hour sessions, pupils confidence increased by 100% whilst their self-esteem was enhanced by 130%. Teachers later went onto reveal to us that those selected for the school-based mentoring scheme had become more willing to get involved in projects in the classroom.
