With the new year comes new resolutions, with most people opting to develop better exercise regimes and healthy eating habits. In recent years, however, there has been a growing trend towards volunteering within the community, with online publications suggesting that there will be more interest from people looking to get involved with their local community.
As a small York-based children's charity, we are always on the lookout for more volunteer mentors who can each support the children and young people who use our services. This can be done either through our one-to-one mentoring programme or our group based provisions which have been designed to help develop essential skills for the next generation.
If you are thinking of becoming a volunteer mentor with us then the first thing you should do is to visit our volunteers page by clicking here and select which mentoring provision you would like to get involved in.
Once you have selected which programme you would like to get involved in, simply download an application form by clicking here and once completed send it across to the email address at the bottom of the form. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided. We will also finance your Enhanced DBS check.
We have several training dates throughout 2022, however, only those who have been selected onto programme may attend training (prospective mentors only need to attend two dates). Below you will find a list of our training dates for 2022, this page will be updated with the dates and times once they have been confirmed.

Once you have completed your training, we will then send off your Enhanced DBS Check and begin looking to match you with a child or young people. Once we've received your Enhanced DBS Check clearance back, we will then look to book an appointment where you will meet with your mentee and begin your mentoring relationships with them. Throughout your mentoring journey, The Island team will be with you every step of the way and offer advice, guidance and additional training, however this is not compulsory.
Why not follow us on our social media channels - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok to keep up to date with our charity work in York - providing Islands of space and time for vulnerable children and young people; by building confidence, self-esteem and unlocking potential through positive mentoring relationships and unique programmes.
