With the winter months drawing in, the scarves, gloves and hats come out and usually, the heating dial goes up a few notches. Keeping children active in the winter months can be hard, especially when motivation is at its lowest. But fear not! This blog post has some tips and tricks on different ways you can remain active this winter.
If we all learned one thing from the pandemic, it’s that we have some wonderful walks around our area. With your child, start small and walk as much as you both feel comfortable. If you haven’t already, try a walk in our beautiful city. Try a walk on the City Walls or have a walk down the river over Millennium Bridge and back through Rowntree’s Park. This can be a fun activity that can include the whole family.
One of the best ways to keep fit and healthy is to regularly jog. It can seem like a daunting task, but it is proven to enhance people’s overall health and wellbeing.
If your child is new to running and would like to try it, then we’d recommend signing them up for the Junior Park Runs. Park Runs are free weekly runs that are held on weekends at the York Racecourse. It is a great way for children to develop their running technique whilst at the same time, meeting other children.
At home workouts have become hugely popular in recent years with celebrated people, like Joe Wicks hosting regular PE sessions for children and young people online during the lockdown.
Since then, more at home workouts have been created with children and young people in mind which means there are a lot more exercise training guides readily available. Children and young people can get their hearts pumping by accessing YouTube’s ‘try at home’ classes or by collaborating with friends to host their own regular exercise sessions either online or face to face.
Swimming is a great activity for children and young people as not only does it build up endurance and keeps you fit, but it is also a lot of fun!
In York, we are lucky enough to have several swimming pools across the city. You can view the full list of swimming pools by clicking here.
Exercise can help everyone with their physical and mental health as well as improve quality of life.
One of the greatest ways that you can motivate your children is by praising them for trying their best even if they don’t get it right straight away.
Positive communication is key to helping children and young people to think more positively about exercise, however, it is important to lead by example. By participating in exercise activities, yourself, this can influence and inspire your child to get active and to see exercise in a more positive light.
