We are currently looking to recruit more one-to-one volunteer mentors who will be able to support a child or young person on our waiting list. You do not need any experience of working with children or young people as we host several training sessions throughout the year (you need to attend three sessions over three evenings) which have been designed to help you with your mentoring journey.
Currently, our waiting list from children needing to access our one-to-one mentoring programme due to difficulties with their mental, emotional and social wellbeing is near to full capacity. We need more one-to-one mentors who can help build the confidence, self-esteem and resilient levels of a vulnerable child living in York.
As a volunteer mentor, you will be paired with a child and will work with them on a one-to-one basis over a 12-month period. Ideally, we would like all mentors to meet with their mentees on a weekly basis, however, we understand that everyone has other commitments, therefore, the mentoring relationship can be tailored around your schedule but we do require some consistency to ensure the child is able to build a trusting relationship with you.
We find every child is different, therefore, we create bespoke and unique programmes for each mentor and their mentee to ensure they get as much benefit as possible during their time together. From our own in-house research, we've found that most children will open up to their mentors through recreational activity hence why we tailor the mentoring relationships accordingly.
We carefully pair mentors and mentees together based on their shared interests as this tends to encourage conversation as well as starts the process of building a quality relationship which results in mentors being able to inspire and build feelings of self-worth within their mentees.
Being a mentor at The Island is very rewarding, mentors regularly tell us how great it is to see how their mentee has blossomed throughout the programme and how mentees are able to deal with situations without it having a negative impact on their wellbeing. Our mentors also get a lot of pleasure from helping the next generation and stay with us long-term or find volunteering with us offers the perfect opportunity to start a career within the education, youth or social care sector.
No experience is required to become a mentor with us as full training will be provided and we'll finance your Enhanced DBS Check and offer you full support throughout your mentoring journey.
We'd love to be able to secure a higher number of one-to-one mentors for our October intake and hope you will consider volunteering with us. To download an application form, please click here
