After the success of last year's event, we're delighted to have been asked back by the York Beer and Cider Festival on Saturday 21 September to raise awareness and funds for our worthy cause.
Taking place opposite the Grand Stand on the York Racecourse, the York Beer and Cider Festival is home to over 500 unique beers and ciders from across the world. In addition, there will also be an abundance of live music throughout the festival performed by some of York's finest musicians and bands.
We're hugely grateful to the York Beer and Cider Festival for providing us with the opportunity to raise awareness about our charity with their audiences. Over the years, we have had many successes by working with the festival, including, receiving many generous funds which has enabled us to guarantee some mentoring services as well as gained many new mentors which have enabled us to keep our waiting list numbers down.
With our waiting list numbers for our one to one mentoring services close to reaching full capacity, we're hoping this year's event will enable us to generate more mentors who will each support a child on our waiting list.
The children on our waiting list are needing to access our services for a number of reasons, however, the main reasons that we have been able to identify are struggling with anxiety and/or low mood, witnessing and/or experiencing domestic violence and/or substance misuse and anti-social behaviour within the home and in the community plus more.
As an early intervention provider, we are keen to provide vulnerable children and young people with a mentor aka a positive role-model who can help increase their confidence, self-esteem, resilience levels and to empower the mentees to make healthier life decisions, which will better equip them for the future.
Our mentoring programmes have high success rates in transforming the lives of children, many of our previous mentees have stated that without the help of The Island they feel they would not have achieved the successes that they generated. Several of our ex-mentees (who are now adults) own and run their own businesses, others have pursued further education and more recently, one of our previous ex-mentees is now giving back to The Island by becoming a mentor themselves in order to support a local child in need.
Mentoring really does make a difference and is hugely rewarding, if you're interested in volunteering with us and are coming to the York Beer and Cider Festival then please do come and speak to a member of The Island team who will be delighted to discuss the variety of mentoring options with you.
