With cooler months ahead, children and young people may focus their interests on more sedentary activities, however, it is crucial that everyone keeps active even if the weather forecast doesn't look too inviting. Here are some of our top tips to help get the family active.
I am sure you will agree that with autumn comes a burst of colour. The different coloured leaves are appealing, especially to those who are arty and like to craft. Leaf collecting and turning them into works of art is a popular activity with our mentors and mentees, as not only is it cost effective but it can provide hours of fun.
One of our past mentors said "My mentee struggled with exercise, but had a huge passion for drawing and painting. During one of our mentoring sessions we decided to go for a walk around the local park to look for some unusual looking autumn leaves for an art project. The search for the perfect leaf lasted over an hour and during that time, my mentee remained focussed, busy and more importantly, active! Once he found the ideal leaf, we headed over to the local café and used the leaf as a model and began our drawing project. It was a really lovely mentoring session and from time to time I still hear how he still goes out and looks for new objects for art projects. A simple session like this has meant that he is continuing to move in the colder months whilst at the same time allowing him to explore his interests. It's a great project to do, especially if you are stuck with ideas of what to do."
Going for a walk or a bike on a crisp autumn morning is a great way to get out and about. During your time out together, you could set your children a challenge to keep their minds busy, for example, how many trees or dog walks can they spot.
One of our mentors said "We loved going out together on walks and more recently, we went on a short bike ride near the York Racecourse where we stopped to eat our pack ups and have a catch up. My young person wasn't very confident when we first started going on bike rides but their confidence has come on leaps and bounds and we're looking forward to going on more bike rides in the autumn. I'd recommend to activity to anyone."
Some children and young people, despite trying, prefer not to go out during the cooler months and this is fine, however, continuing to move is important and we'd recommend looking for fun and engaging activities which they can get involved in. For example, set them a challenge to tidy up a room in ten minutes or host a family dance challenge.
One of our mentors said "We don't go into mentees homes, however, over the last year (due to the pandemic) we have been hosting mentoring sessions over Zoom. My mentee and I have become interested in yoga and so using Youtube videos as a guide, we have been hosting regular yoga sessions in the comfort of our own homes. I feel that the sessions have really helped her, she seems a lot calmer and I have been informed that she is sleeping a lot better which is great to hear. Moving is not just good for physical health but also helps with mental and emotional wellbeing as well."
