In-work food poverty has grown considerably in recent years, with The Island now home to a full-service food bank for Island families. Public Health Scotland states ‘Poverty has negative impacts on children’s health, social, emotional and cognitive development, behaviour and educational outcomes.’ They go on to state that ‘Poverty puts an additional strain on families, which can lead to parental mental health and relationship problems, financial problems and substance misuse. This can have a negative impact on parenting behaviours which impact children’s outcomes.’
As an early intervention service, we look to support children and young people at their most fundamental stages in life. As a result of doing this, we’re able to help children to have a happy childhood which improves their confidence, self-esteem and resilience levels, long-term.
Food insecurity can affect all areas of a child’s life not just in terms of health but also their overall wellbeing. By providing Island families with a food bank service it:
· Prevents children from slipping through the gaps of the education system as they are able to better concentrate in the class-room
· Nurtures positive at home relationships with parents, carers, siblings as it relieves stress and anxiety over whether they can afford to eat
· Supports a good and nutritious diet which prevents ill health and additional strain on health services
We also work with Island families to lessen the strain they feel and provide a space of relaxation which is so key to family life and therefore to all members of the family. Thanks to a very generous private donation of a holiday flat in Bridlington, we are now able to provide coastal getaways for our Island families.
In 2020, we were (under COVID-19 guidelines) able to offer 16 Island families with a much-needed break. The beauty of the holiday flat is that it provides Island families with the opportunity to take some time out and reconnect with one another. The use of the holiday flat was described as ‘life changing’ by one parent who had always wished of taking her children on holiday but was unable to afford a holiday away despite working three jobs.
It is due to the kindness of people within our community that we are able to offer such services and keep reaching the need in our community. If you would like to be a part of positive change within the lives of our young people please consider becoming a mentor, setting up a fundraiser or, if you are able, send us a donation here.
