The most wonderful time of the year… Christmas! But not the most wonderful time for some people. Childhood memories, experiences and emotions shape the person you become in the future without you realising it. Christmas is supposed to be the most-happiest time of the year and therefore the best time to build a positive relationship for children to grow up with.
Of course, the pressure is on parents/guardians to make Christmas special for their children, however it’s not about the most expensive presents or the number of presents, it’s about celebrating being together, getting that magical and warm feeling of Christmas that everyone should get the chance to experience. It’s the simple things like decorating the Christmas tree, hot chocolates and Christmas songs. These are all positive reinforcements that children will carrying on and then eventually pass onto their children. It is surprising how much the positive effect can affect so many generations. Life is constantly changing for children, it may seem a little change for us, but for a child a change is a huge thing. Therefore, building a Christmas tradition reminds children that there is structure to life and there can be consistency within life.
Not only is Christmas a time to spread joy to children, but they can also learn valuable attributes such as kindness, forgiveness and understanding. Kindness in the way of giving something to someone else, whether it’s tangible or intangible. Forgiveness in the way that Christmas is a time to be happy. Understanding in the way of different beliefs and how they celebrate Christmas.
Within schools, Christmas is a very much celebrated time of year, the nativity, Christmas crafts, parties. A child who isn’t happy around Christmas can quickly become isolated and even have emotional unrest such as feeling angry or sad. A child therefore misses out on so much within school that could ultimately be positive reinforcements. Within school, Christmas is a time to have a pause on worrying about academic studies and have a little break from the real world and therefore so important that children get the chance to be involved.
Building these wonderful memories for children gives them something to look back on and get that warm feeling of love, joy and excitement no matter what their current situation holds. No child should be growing to up to disregard Christmas when it is most certainly the most wonderful time of year.
